“Postage Series 1” is a framed mixed-media collage by Karen Propp, created directly on a vintage stamp collection page. The aged paper and philatelic format become part of the composition, bringing associations with travel, correspondence, collecting and systems of classification.
The work combines contemporary collage, altered ephemera and archival assemblage. Its use of postal material places it in conversation with the history of mail art, particularly the collage-based correspondence work of Ray Johnson, as well as Fluxus artists such as Robert Watts, who incorporated postage stamps and everyday systems of distribution into fine art. These references offer historical context rather than suggesting direct influence.
