“Natural and Man-Made Moons” is a found-object assemblage by Karen Propp constructed inside a divided cigar box. Collaged imagery, textured fragments and small sculptural objects are arranged across two compartments, including a moon-like stone form and a repeated row of vintage light bulbs. The combination of natural materials, manufactured objects and miniature architecture gives the work the feeling of a specimen case or private collection.
The piece draws on the traditions of Surrealist assemblage, found-object art and the cabinet of curiosities. Its boxed format and poetic arrangement of unrelated objects recall Joseph Cornell’s shadow-box constructions, while the emphasis on salvaged materials and visual association reflects the broader history of assemblage art. The title invites the viewer to consider how similar forms appear in nature, machinery and the imagination.
